The Downers Grove Coalition for Managed Redevelopment provides
a focus for Downers Grove residents, architects,
realtors, builders, and others
dedicated to managing
Downers Grove redevelopment in a way that promotes growth while
maintaining our
rich cultural, architectural, and natural heritage,
as well as our economic prosperity.
The Coalition was initiated by members of Downers Grove Watch, and
Pierce Downer’s Heritage Alliance.
Our mission is to establish a common voice that assists in
the management
of growth in our community.

Total Community Development Planning
This
year the Village of Downers Grove is instituting a planning process
called Total Community Development (TCD3). The first workshop
was held March 4, 2009. This process will lead to a revision in the
village’s comprehensive plan, which in turn will serve as a baseline
for setting priorities and policies in for the next several
years. What does it all mean for residents? It’s a major
chance to let the Village know what you think is important. Click on the following banner from Village's website to learn more.

Local Landmarking Now Available
Village landmarks have doubled!
We now have two designated landmark homes in the Village:
1. The Drew House on Carpenter Street, a Gothic Revival house is
identified with Mr. Donald Drew, a founding father of the Downers Grove
Oratorio Society, now known as the Downers Grove Choral Society.
2. The home at 4943 Highland Ave., built in 1883 for Gustav
Bunge, builder of the Tivoli Theatre and former village
official. The house originally stood where the Tivoli is now, and
was moved to its current location in 1927. It features beautiful
woodwork and stained glass.
Is
your house, business, or neighborhood a special part of Downers Grove
history? Would you like to see it protected against teardowns or
“remuddling”?

The Chicago Suburban Alliance met at the Legge Memorial Park Lodge in Hinsdale.
The Alliance consists of people from all around the
Chicago area who are interested in preserving neighborhoods and
historic homes and buildings. It lets the Coalition share information
and ideas with other nearby communities facing the same sorts of issues
with teardowns and redevelopment. It meets about once a quarter at various locations around the Chicago suburban area.

A Historic Occasion
On Tuesday July 3, 2007, the Downers Grove Historic Preservation
Ordinance was adopted by a unanimous vote of the Village Council.

The Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) has made recommendations to
Village Council to address Historic Preservation and Appearance Code
Guidelines.
The Coalition for Managed Redevelopment commends the
Architectural Design Review Board (ADRB) for their
efforts on behalf of the Village. Under the
direction of Chairman Mike Davenport, the ADRB has
devoted considerable thought and effort to developing
recommendations to the Village Council on two issues:
historic preservation and architectural design review.
A team of Downers Grove concerned citizens has been studying the loss
of homes available to middle income buyers in our village and reviewing
solutions that have worked in other communities. A complete,
well balanced community has room for new young families, beginning
teachers, police, and fire fighters -- but we are rapidly moving away
from that.
In 2005 the Village Forester presented carefully drafted proposals to the
Council for ordinances to minimize the loss of trees during
redevelopment projects and home additions. However, the Council chose not to act – either to accept, or formally reject – the part of the proposal dealing with trees on the lot itself. DGCMR
would like to see the Village re-consider, and adopt, an ordinance
providing for protection of trees on the site of demolition and
construction projects. to "take stock" of how well the current
protection of parkway trees is working.
